I am using a round loom to knit a flat piece. My problem is that I am purling the first and last 3 stitches and knitting the rest but the first row is extremely loose and doesn't look nice. How do you keep the tension tighter?

Hi D.!

In this case, it may be that when you finish your project, blocking it (a light mist of water, and shaping), will bring it all into line.

There are was and other cast-ons (And offs)that will help in the future - (this is a major betterment that loomers are always inventing things for!).lol

This is Kristen's youtube channel. She makes amazing videos, most on the KKs, but also Martha Stewart loom, etc. Tons of how-tos, and she has an amazing stitch (vid) directory, Starts at the beginning KKs round and longloom, and then goes way beyond, all in full color!It is loomilicious! Tons of patterns also! - Excellant explanetary and seeable vids - makes it a point to go slow, and in depth.
