Help with the Pattern Instructions

Uggg. I'm so confused. My pattern says to:

Row 4: Ship 1, P2 (skip 1 WYIF, P1) across to last 4 pegs, Skip 1 WYIF, P2, K1.

Instruction Symbol says:
( ) or - work enclosed instructions as many times as specified by the number immediately following or contains explanatory remarks.

SO my question(s). I do understand the "stitches and abbreviations. EXCEPT the P2. Does that mean to Purl the next two pegs OR Purl each of the following pegs in the row two times each?

Do I work the instructions in the parentheses or does the parenthesis just explain the first two stitches? Why do they put some instructions in parenthesis?

Hopefully I haven't confused you girls reading? Thanks for your help!

Tara
