Knifty Knitter Woven top hat

The instructions for the woven part of this hat are vague. I tried following them but the top of the hat is too loose. Anyone made this hat before? It's in the Learn new stitches on Circle Looms book.

I made the woven top hat in the circle loom book, and finally figured out the weaving instructions and it looked really cool. I mostly looked at the picture rather than try to decipher the written instructions. The thing I had trouble with was the bind-off being too tight. Plus I really needed to do it on the yellow loom -- the green one even is small for a youth hat, I think.

So how does one make a looser bind-off either using their suggested flat method, or some other method?

I thought this hat looked fantastic in the picture but I had the worst time with the weaving and, like the first person to leave a comment, had no idea what to do with the yarn when I was done. And I was not too happy that the weave was much more loose than the picture shows. I'm using the exact yarn and it's much too loose. I would love to see a video instruction for this - it would help a lot!

I just made it last night using Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn. The top is woven loosely - but I don't mind that. (Although it is a bit more open weave than the picture showed). What bugged me is it didn't give clear instructions about what to do with your yarn ends from the top weave once you started to knit - I ended up knotting them and weaving the ends through. I'm going to re-do it though- I think I'd like 8 to 10 more rows of knitting so that it'll curl into a brim - it barely covers the tops of my ears now.
