Newborn sock help.

by Brian Miville

Hello,

I have used knifty knitter looms off and on for several years now but decided to take things to a new level, and as such I picked up two KB sock looms, the fine and the Super Fine. As a first project I want to make a pair of socks for my cousin, who is pregnant and due in Feb., for her soon-to-arrive daughter. I bought some Bernat super fine (1) weight yarn, and I have a fairly good idea of the required stitches that will be used. What I can't find so easily is how many pegs I should use with the super fine loom and the 1 weight yarn. And not knowing the average size of a newborns foot I have no idea where to even start. So I am hoping someone here might be able to guide me along in the right direction. Also, I would be grateful for any advice for the first time loom sock knitter.

Thanks!

Thanks! NEW

Thank you ladies for the suggestions! I think my first step will be to make a test swatch. The link for the sock chart also looks like it can be a big help too. And I will also jump on Facebook and search out some loom knitting pages. Worse case I can just make her some baby sized socks, and she can use them when the baby gets to proper size to wear them. As they say it is more about the thought that counts!

Newborn Sock help/socklooms NEW

Hi again, Brian!

Another cool resource would be the Authentic Knitting Board Site, or Amazon. Search for Isela Phelps.

She did a ton of books and intros for sock knitting, and the sock looms, and has all the basics for sock looms, patterns, a dvd of sock loom basics, (hey, we can all love watching loom vids,) and recommends that with the reg kb sock loom, and EFG, that you get familiar with everything you can do. There is prob also, a way to adjust patterns from a reg loom pattern to a sock loom. The books are on Amazon, as well as the AKB site, which also has her DVD of Sock loom basics. Just a thought, she was active on the AKB site.

Newborn Sock help NEW

Hi there Brian!
I too confess that I have never used the kb sock looms, but have made socks and booties on the kks. baby booties.) Since I don't have kids to knit for around, well, had fun anyway. (using the flower loom. Great booties though!)

I would also suggest going to facebook, and in the search thing up yop left, search loom groups. There are several, and they are all good and interactive. Tare mad loomers of all type looms, and many many sock knitters with kbs.

Also go to Kristen Mangus's Website, and FB group,) called Goodknit Kisses. I searched around for newborn sizes, and couldn't find anything much until I checked her website. link coming!) Under resources,I found an infant/baby size chart, AND something about sock math! Check it out! It has newborns and preemies, etc for looms.
http://www.goodknitkisses.com/Resources/sock-math-chart-measurements/

Have you made a swatch? (say, ewrap for starters, maybe a 2 inch by 2 inch, just so you have an idea of how many stitches to the inch that you are doing. (I hate swatches, but find them greatfor new looms, getting the feel of them) I would suggest making a baby bootie, first. Just to get the hang and size of it - then you can adjust.) There are tons of simple bootie patterns: Here's one: http://www.loomahat.com/baby-booties/
Since sock looms are so small, especially the efg kb, I would times 4 or 5, (ie, 5 stitches on a kk type loom would be 25 stitches on the efg.) The first sample may come out wonky, but heck, you are now more in control, and can give that to a leprechaun maybe. LOL Hope this helps! (I am too lazy to want to go micro with a sock loom!) Good for you!
By the way, Kristen had a couple baby bonnets, loomed, a couple of years ago. She has a you tube channel, as well as blogs, est way to find stuff is google kristen Mangus+images. Then you can check pics for clickthrough how to get patterns. She's a loom guru, and has worked and reviewed looms, etc, for all the loom mfg companies. (you tube channel, or her site.)

Another way to find things/patterns is to go to google images, and enter socks made on the kb sock loom, (or the kb sock loom efg.) one gets tons of pics, which will click through to pattern or blog, or more about, when you see one you like. Many are pinterest registered related, but maybe you have...I have too many things I am signed up for, so don't have this.)

Hope this helps! I didn't find anything about newborn feet length though! Good luck, but really, go to FB and join several loom groups.
Jenny!

Well, I make socks using the loom you have and others. But, never have made a newborn size. An idea, KB Sock Looms are mad by Authentic Knitting Board Company and they have a web site with lots of information and patterns too. Also, they have a facebook page and many ask questions on there. Maybe one of these sites could help you. This is a nice site too but try the others if you do not get the answer here. Google search Authentic Knitting Board......I am sure you will find lots of info. Good Luck!!
