sock loom stitches get too tight

Hi all. I've just started using a sock loom, and no matter how loose I make the cast on stitches, it's too tight to work with 5 rows later. What am I doing wrong? Suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Here is what I do. After knit stitch, I use hook to pull a little of the working yarn loop on the stitch I just knitted. Hope this helps.
